Laura Stairs, BA(H), JD
Laura brings a broad legal background into her refugee and immigration practice. Laura attended the University of Windsor, Faculty of Law after receiving her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Global Development at Queen’s University. Laura’s passion for education, social justice and international travel brought her to study in the United Kingdom, Cuba and South Africa. She is licensed as a lawyer by the Law Society of Ontario.
Laura previously worked in the corporate law department at a full-service firm and practiced public benefits law at Legal Assistance of Windsor. Laura is an engaged and active member of the Windsor community. She sits on the Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee of Windsor-Essex. She has been a part-time instructor at St. Clair College in the Paralegal and Social Justice and Legal Studies programs. Laura is currently improving her French by taking French as a Second Language at Collège Boréal.
Laura’s current practice is focused exclusively on refugee and immigration law.
Isabella MacMillan, M.S.W., J.D.
Isabella brings a combined background in law and social work into her immigration and refugee practice. Isabella attended the University of Windsor, where she completed both her Juris Doctor and Master of Social Work after receiving her Bachelor of Social Work (Honours). She is licensed as a lawyer by the Law Society of Ontario.
Isabella previously worked with community organizations and legal clinics across Windsor-Essex, where she gained frontline experience supporting vulnerable clients through counselling, advocacy, and crisis intervention. During law school, she expanded her work into immigration and refugee law, focusing on migrant farm worker advocacy at both the individual and systemic levels. She also held leadership roles in initiatives promoting women in law and social justice during her studies.
Isabella’s current practice is focused exclusively on refugee and immigration law.
Charlize Abreu
Charlize Abreu is a Law Clerk at Laura Stairs Professional Corporation, where she has worked since August 2024. Originally from Mexico, Charlize immigrated to Canada more than two years ago and brings both personal experience and professional dedication to her work in refugee and immigration law.
Her background as an immigrant gives her valuable insight into the immigration system and the challenges clients may encounter. She assists with several immigration matters, providing clients with thorough support and guidance throughout their applications. Charlize is fluent in English and Spanish, and she also acts as an interpreter and translates documents to ensure clear communication for clients.
In 2020, Charlize obtained a Richmond C1 qualification in English as a Second Language and also attended courses at a Cambridge-certified school in Mexico. She is currently furthering her education by completing university courses at St. Michael’s Catholic School. In addition to her professional work, Charlize provides free English classes as a volunteer for Spanish-speaking immigrants, reflecting her commitment to helping newcomers feel supported in Canada.
